This fascinating half-day tour will focus on the contrast between the ancient Maya city of Altun Ha and modern-day Belize City, highlighting 1,000 years of development of this former British Colony. Altun Ha thrived as a trading post to the Maya World during the Post Classic and Classic periods.

Belize City today is home to about 35% of the country's population and your guide will provide an interesting reflection of the city's history. Note the colonial wooden architecture of many of the houses throughout your tour.

A Tale of Two Cities Tour from Belize City Description

This fascinating half-day tour will focus on the contrast between the ancient Maya city of Altun Ha and modern-day Belize City, highlighting 1,000 years of development of this former British Colony. Altun Ha thrived as a trading post to the Maya World during the Post Classic and Classic periods.

The most startling archaeological find on the site, and Belize's most valuable, was the discovery of a giant carved head made entirely of jade. Weighing in at an astonishing nine pounds, it depicts the Sun God "Kinich Ahau."

Our tour continues into the heart of Belize City for a visit that includes historical sites such as St. John's Cathedral - the largest Anglican church in Central America - and the Colonial Mansion. Once the home of British Governors, it now houses the "House of Culture." We round off our tour by dropping in for a complimentary drink at the Smoky Mermaid, another favourite Belize landmark.

This tour does have moderate walking on more difficult terrain, longer walking on relatively easy terrain and may include some inclines. There are flights of stairs during the excursion.

All rates include transportation, tour guide, park fee, and refreshments.
